Pre-Conference One-Day Field Trips
Tapantí National Park
We will visit the Tapantí National Park located at 2,500 meters above sea level (8,400 ft) in the province of Cartago. This field trip will require participants to be in decent shape as hiking will be the main activity conducted throughout the day (approximately 6km/4mi). See magnificent natural landscapes and wildlife hiking next to the Rio Grande de Orosi river. Following the hike, we will visit the Hacienda Ganadera Tapantí Media, a locally-owned and operated ranch. At the ranch, we will enjoy a traditional Costa Rican lunch and engage in other activities (e.g., swimming at the river, walking the trails, milking the cows) in a leisurely way.
Coffee Co-ops and Environmentalism
We will visit the Cerro de la Muerte (highest point at 3,345 meters/10,974 ft above sea level) and the Zona de los Santos to learn from the work that two locally managed coffee co-ops are doing in relation to sustainability. Participants will learn about carbon neutral practices and innovation happening at these co-ops followed by a tour through plantations and finishing up with coffee tastings.
San José City Tour
We will visit some of the most iconic buildings and historical places in San José. The tour will take participants through different city sectors including those nearby the National Stadium and Escazú before stopping at the National Theater and National Museum located downtown. A tour guide will provide information on route about the different landmarks seen. Lunch will take place at Nuestra Tierra, a well-known restaurant in San Jose serving Costa Rican traditional food.
Student Life at the University of Costa Rica
This field trip will only be available for IASNR student members. Developed and led by University of Costa Rica students, this tour will showcase campus and practices that UCR students engage in. Bring comfortable clothes, as participants will walk through campus. A visit to the university forest and butterfly garden will end at the sport facilities of the University in Sabanilla. Following a short hike through the trails, students will enjoy a picnic and end the day with a friendly soccer match.
