Abstract
With time and the generation's evolution, heritage is a legacy of current society. Heritage not only improves individual’s depths but also increases their sense of identity and supports their own ethnic and cultural roots. Some researches on heritage indicate that nostalgia is the driving force for people to visit heritage sites (Hewison, 1991). Nostalgia was seen as a condition embodying a deep longing for days gone by (Prete, 2001). Therefore, nostalgia can be characterized as a personal yearning for the past, a sentiment triggered by any object, landscape, scent, or even music (Belk, 1990). Furthermore, the physical environment, culture, and associated activities of heritage sites also can create a sense of authenticity for visitors (Moscardo & Pearce, 1986). The authenticity of the heritage or historical site is claimed to be the role to evoke the feeling of nostalgia (Baker & Kennedy, 1994). Nostalgia can invoke an individual's past experiences and increase the sense of authenticity (Kelley et al., 2022). This study would focus on the effects of personal life experience on evoking the emotion of nostalgia. And, to explore the influences of nostalgia on the perception of authenticity around the historical area. The study was conducted in Air Force San-Chong Village and Da Dao Cheng Area. These two study areas were occupied by old buildings and spaces. The data was collected by interviewing the visitors while they completed the visit. The study results showed that most of the respondents were attracted by the historical atmosphere of the area. When the visitors had a living experience in these historical areas, the emotion of nostalgia was higher after visiting these historical sites. This study found that when visitors had higher nostalgia, their sense of authenticity about the environment increased more. This study presented the importance of people's life experiences in shaping their attitudes toward cultural preservation.
