Abstract
The Shark Bay World Heritage Area is internationally renowned and unique for its natural heritage values. It is also highly vulnerable to the effects of a changing climate. Traditional Custodian values, knowledge, and lived experiences are yet to be formally recognised as inherent values to the region and mobilised to facilitate adaptation to climate change. This project with Malgana Peoples in the SBWHA aims to make their values visible for climate resilience and engage with their diverse lived experiences and aspirations. This long-term project with Malgana Peoples brings elders, board members and rangers to Country meetings in the SBWHA. It adopts participatory tools, including mapping, seasonal calendar and historical narratives, guided by a jointly developed timeline, to make visible Malgana Peoples' values, histories, knowledge that relate to customary territory. The Malgana Peoples prioritised these tools. In integrating intersectionality in the research, the team facilitated discussions separately among the women and men while supporting collective knowledge sharing. The research team engaged with the geography of Malgana Peoples's connections to Country, their roles, gender and age. Integrating intersectionality required shifting our approach and applying the research methods with care through testing, feedback and consensus in line with Malgana Peoples's aspirations for self-determination. The research demonstrates a nuance in making values visible for Indigenous-centred climate resilience and adaptation. This research highlights how working with the diverse values, capacities, and lived experiences of Indigenous Peoples can produce vulnerabilities and strengths that may not be catered for in policy-driven approaches. It also highlights the importance of responsibly and meaningfully integrating intersectionality into research that aligns with the aspirations of Indigenous groups.
