Session Abstract
In a time of rapid change at local and global scales, collaborative transdisciplinary research offers integrative and solutions-oriented approaches to address complex social-ecological systems issues. Crossing disciplinary boundaries for complex problem solving requires the coordination of researchers and practicing professionals across specialties. As such, communication and connectivity between disciplinary experts is key to successful transdisciplinary work. Challenges of this collaborative work include the need to incorporate theories, methodologies, and analytical tools from diverse disciplines and ways of knowing, along with the difficult task of integrating information across relevant spatial scales and data types. Data collection can be based on different methods and driven by paradigms with contrasting philosophical underpinnings. Additionally, collaborative research about complex socio-ecological systems requires the inclusion of a diversity of ways of knowing, such as Indigenous Knowledge, while respecting data governance and sovereignty. While these characteristics are what make transdisciplinary research unique, they can add challenges to large scale theoretical or analytical integration. During our proposed session we are seeking to highlight experts who have participated in successful integration across disciplines (i.e., theories, data types, ways of knowing) in their research projects and to share their experiences. The invited experts bring extensive experience applying various transdisciplinary research models using a diverse range of approaches to integration, and from a variety of spatiotemporal systems from recreation to health. Additional invited speakers will expand on the breadth of integrative transdisciplinary research represented in the list. Attendees of this organized session will be exposed to novel and exciting frontiers in integrative research and the session seeks to inspire transdisciplinary practitioners across career stages.
